You were great in school…why aren’t you “great” in your career?
By Eleanor Beaton
If the world were a school, women would be the undisputed leaders.
According to research from the American Psychological Association, girls have done better than boys in school for nearly a century. Women make up half the graduating class of many advanced degrees.
But somewhere along the way, many women find that the skills that helped them succeed in school are NOT helpful in succeeding in life.
Maybe you have experienced this.
As a student, you excelled, but when it comes to advancing in your career, you feel directionless and stagnant.
You work hard – exceptionally hard…but your to-do list never diminishes and at the end of each day, you have an even LONGER list of tasks to complete.
You get great results…but you often feel inadequate, and that you’re not taken seriously.
The idea of engaging in workplace politics makes you ill.
You dream of making a meaningful contribution, but you often feel your voice is not heard, and it’s frustrating the hell out of you.
Some days, the frustration makes you want to self-medicate with ice cream and pinot noir.
Other days, you dream of running away from your corporate job. (In fact, the frustrations I describe above, contribute to why women are leaving the corporate world in record numbers.)
But the truth is, you’re not ready to leave the corporate world. Not yet, anyway. You want to build a meaningful career inside an organization…but your not sure how to do it.
When I’m leading workshops with women who want to step onto the CEO track, one of the things I teach that surprises them the most is this:
This sounds incredibly scary if you are anything like I used to be: a die-hard “good girl”, who tried to succeed by playing by the rules.
In reality, success and advancement at work is about understanding the unwritten rules AND letting go of certain internal limitations that have been holding you back.
